June 5, Monday, 2000, Starting at 6:00 p.m.	State of the Skate Celebration The Sacramento State of the Skate Celebration will start at 6:00 on June 5, Monday, at 3rd and S, site of the Monday Night Skate. Jerry Tyler, K2 Skate Representative, and the K2 van will be at this skate for skaters who want to try the latest K2 skates. More information as it becomes available.

April 21-23, Friday - Sunday, 2000.	The Sacramento Eddy Matzger Skating Workshop will be April 21-23, 2000 in Sacramento, CA. The exact location in Sacramento has yet to be determined. The workshop will be limited to 22 skaters. Briefly, it is a weekend workshop for all levels of skaters, which covers all aspects of skating including racing and the double push. It starts on Friday late afternoon with a group skate and 'chalk talk' theory lesson Friday evening. The Friday evening session will be from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. On Saturday there will be 8 hours of teaching, drills etc. from 8am to noon and again from 2pm to 6pm. This is followed by an evening potluck meal where the video tape of the day's skate is analyzed for each attendant. Sunday is again 8am to noon and then 2pm to 6pm. The cost of the workshop is $175.00 plus a share of Eddy's airfare. This additional cost is usually $20 to $40 depending on attendance and can be settled on the Friday night of the workshop when the exact amount is known. Sociology of Skating Writing Opportunity

Alain Loret and I are looking for sociologists who could write an article about skaters in cities (NY, San Francisco, Chicago, for exemple).

The purpose is to publish a book (Autrement eds.) with different contributions in France, Canada, USA, Brazil.

The main themes are: describing of new kind of out door leisure in parks, streets, roads, etc., social characteristics of the skaters (fitness), skater?s way of living, in what kind of jobs/buisness are skaters involved?

Hello Skaters!
Now that rain and cold is cutting down on our skating and ski resorts are starting to open, I propose that we should take a trip into the mountains this winter and skate on skis! If you haven't heard of it before, the skating technique for Nordic or cross-country skiing was developed a couple of decades ago as a racing technique that is faster than the classic diagonal stride technique, which is more like a walking motion. Nordic skiing is principally a means of traversing level ground, as opposed to the better known Alpine skiing where you just coast downhill. Now you know why you see inline skaters with ski poles on the bike paths in the summer--they're keeping in shape for Nordic skiing!
I've never skated on skis before, but I've seen it done, I've read instructional books, and I already know how to ski using the the diagonal stride. As experienced inline skaters, we should have no trouble learning to skate on skis even though it is considered a more difficult technique (actually, there are several different skating techniques) than the diagonal stride. However, I'll be glad to teach the diagonal stride to anyone who prefers it.
If you're interested in such a trip, let me know and I'll contact you when we have a date and a plan. Most likely, we'll wait for the Eagle Mountain resort to open since it's only about an hour's drive away from Sacramento and it's the lowest in elevation (some people get altitude sickness). If we can schedule the trip on a weekday, we could have the resort almost to ourselves, so let me know if weekdays would work for you. At present, we have five people interested in going.

The Larry skated on ahead to Hazel and history. He reached Hazzel about noon. He became the first person to ever legally skate from Discovery Park to Hazel, the part of the parkway that had just become legal for skaters. When Larry came back from Hazel we talked a little, then he returned toward Discovery Park, planning to skate 50 miles that day. I kept skating till I reached the end of the pavement at 2:11pm. I then skated back to Beale Point by 2:15pm. I too made history. I was the first person to ever skate legally from Old Sacramento to Beale Point at Folsom Lake. Sacramento County Board of Supervisors Hearing on implementaion of the year long trail of skaters on the American River Parkway.

As discussed in the November 9 News from Gordon Innes, The Sacramento County Task Force has recommended terms for the one year trial of skaters on the American river Parkway.
The recomendation of Ron Suter, Director, Department of Regional Parks, Recreation and Open Space follows that of the task force.
It is expected tha the County Board of Supervisors will accept the recommendations of the Task Force without a lot of discussion.

November 4, Thursday, 1999. Sacramento County Task Force Meeting to set terms of the skaters trial use of the American River Parkway. Sacramento, CA. A report from Gordon Innes.	Last Thursday the Task Force was able to reach an agreement on what the conditions and rules will be for the in-line skating trial period. Here they are: Conditions: All the trail will be open to skating. There will be no limitations on when skaters may skate. The County will implement a user education program that includes signage, volunteer patrols, and other educational activities. The County will evaluate the impact of skating on the trail. This evaluation will include a trail survey that will be conducted by an independent contractor. Rules Yield to horses at crossings and bridges. Skaters and Bikers use right side of trail except to pass, pedestrians use left shoulder. Announce intent to pass. Wear appropriate safety gear. (This actually means nothing. There will be no enforceable requirements for skaters.) Only in-line skates will be allowed. (no quad skates, roller skis, or skate boards) No skating backward. No pace lines. Skate skinny when being passed. These conditions and rules will go before the Board of Supervisors for approval on December 7, 1999. For more information on this meeting, see upcoming events. The County has also received federal TEA-21 money that will allow the County to resurface the trail and widen it to uniform width of twelve feet. The tone of the meeting was more cooperative this time. The other users are now starting to accept our presence on the trail and County staff is now recognizing that it need to treats us fairly. This has been a long process and we received a lot of opposition throughout it. In retrospect, I still do not understand why other users viewed us as being such a treat to their safety and to their enjoyment of the trail. Hopefully, once we get on the trail people will start to wonder what all the fuss was about. Anyway, skating on the trail on January 1st should feel sweet. County Board of Supervisors Meeting
Sacramento, CA.

At the County Board of Supervisors meeting today, the Board directed the Parks Department to move forward with the implementation of the one-year skating trial on the American River Bicycle Trail. The Parks Department will report back to the Board on November 16 with a status report.
Skip and Lea testified that skating should not be allowed during bicycle commuting hours or on areas of the trail that are hazardous. Although the Board members did not seem interested in limiting the allowable period during which skating will be allowed, they did seem to have some interest in limiting the portions. This will probably be discussed further at the next Board meeting.

September 11, Saturday, 1999 Capital Athletic Club - 8th & O Streets Sacramento, CA.	Gordon Innes coordinated the certification of 5 new Skate Patrol members. The National Skate Patrol helped the instruction with video tapes and literature. Gordon Innes, Mari Tonin, and Steve Lee made the certification become alive and real with their live instruction. Congratualtions: Scott Baggenstoss, Don Chernich, Gary Hedburg, Mazen Haffar, Mitchell Ryan! Welcome to the National Skate Patrol! Carlos Alcala, Bee Staff Writer, published a front page article with pictures in the Sacramento Bee Metro Section September 12, Sunday. His was a positive article with action photgraphs. Deborah Hoffman of Channel 10 and James Taylor of Channel 31 came to the September 13 Monday Night Skate and provided additional coverage. 5 new Certified Natonal Skate Patrol members with positive press coverage!
Requirements for National Skate Patrol Certification: $30.00 annual fee. Like to skate. Like people. Able to stop with heel brake. Able to teach others to stop with the heel brake. Able to stop with a second method, such as the T stop. Able to skate 15 miles. Able to skate backwards. Able to transition from from forward skaing to backward skating.
