Morgan skates down a ramp near the waterfront on the May 22, 2006 Monday Night Skate. Dan skates down a ramp near the waterfront on the May 22, 2006 Monday Night Skate. We had 5 skaters Daniel, Mark, Morgan, Rusty, and myself. It was nice to have Morgan bring his son, Daniel. We decided to again skate the American River Parkway, but to do it differently from last time.

First we skated north on 3 rd Street to O Street, where we skated west to Front Street. Next we skated north on Front Street to the waterway ramp into Old Sacramento. We skated down and up into Old Sacramento on this ramp near the waterfront. (See photos above on the left and the right.).

In Old Sacramento we skated south to 2nd Street, and north 'till the end of 2nd Street, and north again for one block. We were on the American River Parkway.

Next we skated north on the American River Parkway to the Discovery Park Bridge. After regrouping, we skated west on the Discovery Park Bridge into Discovery Park.

graphic letter We then skated the American River Parkway east to Northgate Boulevard, where we skated up onto the new multi-purpose trail ramp.

After again discussing where we wanted to go, we skated back onto the American River Parkway, which we skated to its 20th and C Streets exit.

We skated south on 19th Street to K Street, where we skated west to 11th Street, which we skated south into Capitol Park. Most of the skaters wanted more, so we skated around and through Capitol Park. Three of us even skated down the West Steps of the Capitol. Whee!!!

Next we headed back to our 3rd and S starting point.

I estimate that we skated 8 to 10 miles.

After the skate four of us enjoyed food, beverage, and conversation at Vallejo's. Bobbie, my girlfriend, joined us.

Stuart, Rusty, Gordon, Charity, and Ken take a break near the Sacramento River on the May 15, 2006 Monday Night Skate. Gordon, Ken, Stuart, and Charity zoom into Discovery Park on the May 15, 2006 Monday Night Skate. We had 6 skaters Charity, Gordon, Ken, Rusty, Stuart, and myself. We decided to check out the American River Parkway, to see if it is still flooded or now OK.

Gordon led much of our skate. First we skated north on 3 rd Street to O Street, where we skated west to Front Street.Next we skated north on Front Street into Old Sacramento. In Old Sacramento four of us skated up and down the parking lot.

Next we skated south to 2nd Street, and north 'till the end of 2nd Street, and north again for one block. We were on the American River Parkway.

Next we skated north on the American River Parkway to the Discovery Park Bridge. After regrouping, we skated west on the Discovery Park Bridge into Discovery Park.

graphic letter We then skated the American River Parkway east to Northgate Boulevard, where Gordon led us up onto the new multi-purpose trail ramp.

After again discussing where we wanted to go, we skated south on Northgate Boulevard onto the Twelfth Street Bridge, and south up over the bridge and down (WHEEE!) onto Richard's Boulevard.

On Richard's Boulevard we skated west to 7th Street. We skated south on 7th Street, stopping at 14th and H so two of us could skate up and down a great parking lot (with an elevator).

Soon we were back at our 3rd and S starting point. Rusty estimate we skated 7 miles.

After the skate four of us enjoyed food, beverage, and conversation at Vallejo's.

Stuart, Rusty, Steve, John, and Mark relaxe near the Tower Bridge on the May 8, 2006 Monday Night Skate. Steve fixes skate for Mark near the Sacramento River on the May 8, 2006 Monday Night Skate. We had 7 skaters John, Ken, Mark, Rusty, Steve, Stuart, and myself. Ken is a new skater, who found us through this website. Stuart suggested a southern skate along the Sacramento River Levee, and this is the skate the group voted to do.

Steve led most of our skate. First we skated north on 3 rd Street to O Street, where we skated west to Front Street. (See photo on left.).

Next we skated south on Front Street to the new path close to the Sacramento River.

graphic letter We then skated the new path south to Broadway and then we skated west to Miller Park and the Marina. The water and the boats were very high.

We skated around the Marina, taking only the higher road. Then we skated south on Ramp Road to where we could skate onto the Sacramento River Levee.

Next we skated south on the Levee to Sutterville Road (See photo on right.). After breaking, we skated east on Sutterville Road to the Sacramento Zoo.

After resting, we left the Sacramento Zoo to skate through Land Park.

When we left Land Park, we skated north on 17th Street to California Middle School, where we took a break.

After leaving California Middle School, we skated north on Land Park to the Tower Theater.

Next we enjoyed a stop at the Tower Theater. Then we skated Broadway west to to 11th Street, where we skated north to S Street. After skating west we were back at our 3rd and S starting point.

I estimate that we skated about 8 miles.

Sacramento Skate Patrol Meetings

Steve and Mitchell on Richards Boulevard on the February 5, 2001 Monday Night Skate. Rusty and Mark turn back at the flooding of the American River Parkway near Del Paso Boulevard on the May 1, 2006 Monday Night Skate. The weather is getting better (read: no rain) and our skating group increased to seven skaters this week:

Steve, Bernie, Mark, Stuart, Bryan, Rusty and I comprised the crew for this Monday's skate.

Rusty is a skater from back-in-the-days with Steve and Bernie and the Monday Night Skate and Friday Night Skate groups from ten years ago. Welcome back Rusty!

Obviously, he has kept skating cuz' he rolls right along with street skills, spin stops and all. Bryan is also another returning skater and he is rolling right along. Mark was able to break away from his Physics coursework at CSUS to skate - skating is all about CG placement and accelerations... Stuart is back so we haven't scared him off. Speaking of CGs, Stuart is still laying down an awesome spin stop. He just needs to refine his control of his CG placement... :-)

A skate to CSUS was chosen with a planned route through downtown to North 7th Street to Richards Blvd , over the 12th Street Bridge to the Del Paso Blvd connection of the Jedediah Smith Recreation Trail and the trail to CSUS. We had a few delays along the way:

First delay was a pit stop at Rusty's apartment to pick up his wrist guards.

Then, Stuart had a skate that was not fitting right and kept loosening,

Next, Bryan lost an axle screw somewhere in the I St block of 7th St. and had to remove the misaligned wheel and skate on three wheels in this skate. Even with these occurrences the skate was proceeding well, the weather was perfect and we had a good group. Our skate on North 7th St. to Richards was uneventful (See photo on left.), and we proceeded east to N. 12th St. and we crossed over the American River - everyone's equipment was hanging together.

At the Del Paso Blvd crossing of the trail we found water is still flooding this connection (See photo on right.).Skaters: 0 Mother Nature: 2 (Steve and Bernie attempted this same route last week and had to change their skate because of the high water).

graphic letter We decided on a truncated skate and skirted around the water to the recreation trail entrance that is slightly south and east at the Del Paso Blvd exit off Hwy 160. We took the trail to the bike/ped bridge over the American River . The river high, the water a beautiful emerald and the amber sun reflecting off the river provided a postcard view to the west as we crossed the bridge (maybe I should get a camera!)

Steve set a quick pace on the trail to the connection at N St. where we decided just to skate cross town on 20th St. and connected with Capitol Ave. and take Capitol over to 9th St., and 9th to S St.

A quick skate on S St. brought us back to 3rd and S, our starting point. Estimated distance: 6 miles.

Vallejo's was closed so we decided to swing over to Willie's just off Broadway at 16th St. Rusty, Steve, Stuart, Bernie (and his girlfriend, Bobbie) and I gave Willie's a taste test and no complaints were heard.

The discussions ran the gamut from Kings b-ball, Raiders football, politics, and the San Francisco Friday Night Skate. We are still friends go figure!

Until next week, keep skatin'

Steve and Mitchell on Richards Boulevard on the February 5, 2001 Monday Night Skate. BUSH LIED I DIED sign on Marty Way on the April 17, 2006 Monday Night Skate. We had two skaters tonight: Steve and myself. Steve suggested that we look at the flooding in the American River Parkway, and that we skate down Richards Boulevard.

First we skated north on 3 rd Street and west to the end of O Street . After a brief rest, we skated north on Front Street into Old Sacramento. In Old Sacramento we skated south to 2 nd Street , then we skated north to the end of 2 nd Street , and west onto the American River Parkway , a FANTABULOUS multi-use trail.

After resting and looking at the scenery, we skated north on the American River Parkway to the Discovery Park Bridge . On the bridge, we skated into Discovery Park , and discovered that most of it was flooded..

graphic letter We skated east back up the Discovery Park Bridge . Then we skated east and south on the Discovery Park Road to Richards Boulevard , where we skated east.

Skating east on Richards Boulevard , we stopped at and went into Club Fantasy. All we could see were the male bouncers. See photo on left.).

We continued east to the 12 th Street Bridge, where we skated north to cross the bridge. At the bottom of the bridge, we did more flood investigation by looking through the vehicle stopper on Del Paso Boulevard . See photo on right.).

Then we were homeward bound. We skated south over the B Street Bridge and south on the American River Parkway to about 20 th and C Streets. After skating through town, mainly south on 19 th Street and west on the alley south of R Street we were back at our 3 rd and S starting point.

I estimate that we skated about 8 miles.

Stuart, Brian, and Bernie pose at 3rd and S before the February 20, 2006 Monday Night Skate. Photo by Bryan.

Bernie and I showed up to skate tonight and we decided to take a short skate. I was nursing a strained knee and a long skate would not have been a good idea. A quick loop out to McKinley Park sounded just right so we started off by taking 4 th St. north to R St. and skating east on R.

At 15 th St. we skated north to P St. with a slight diversion through Fremont Park. Eastward on P St. we connected with 21 st St. and went north to Capitol. We took Capitol to Alhambra and Alhambra north to McKinley Park.

The temperatures were much cooler when we started and the winds were quite strong, but by the time we got to McKinley Park the air temp was a little warmer and the wind had either reduced or was being blocked.
Regardless of the reasons for the temperature change, I was cooking in my layers of clothing and took off the sweater I had under my nylon shell.

After cooling our heels for about 5 minutes, Bernie and I got going again and skated south on Alhambra back to Capitol. Westward on Capitol to 15th Blvd got us to Capitol Park as a few raindrops began to fall – the storm front that had been expected to bring rain was almost to Sacramento. We meandered to 9 th St. and skated south to the alley between R and S. Bernie had found this alley to be pretty smooth and lacking car traffic.

graphic letter We made good time through the alley and got back to 4 th Street around 9 pm. This was a 4-1/2 to 5 mile loop.

Bernie and I had food and conversation at Vallejo’s – just the standard light stuff: politics and world affairs and a sprinkling of his trip to Miami for the Great EsSkate. The rain was coming down steady by the time we left so I gave Bernie a ride to his house.

Until next week and conditions allowing, Keep Skatin’

graphic letter We had four skaters tonight: Bernie, Stuart, Bryan and I. Before skating we posed for a photograph (See photo on right.). We decided on a CSUS skate and proceeded east on R St. R St. has terrible asphalt so we eventually crossed over to S. We skated S St. to Alhambra and then connected with T St. We skated T over to 59th St, skating north on 59th we crossed Folsom and took 58th to M St, M St. to 62 St. and then Elvas. We cut through to the CSUS campus at the bike path access on Elvas.

At the parking structure, Bernie went to the top floor to take a downhill run, the rest of us just chilled at the water fountain.

We returned by skating over to the H Street campus entrance and looped back to 58th St. where we turned on M St. Skating M St back to Alhambra, we took Alhambra to Capitol, Capitol to the Capitol Park and skating through the park to 9th St., then 9th to S St.
we finished back at the parking lot.

Though cooler than last week, the conditions were good for skating and this 12 mile loop was a good skate - no injuries this week so this was a great skate!

Bernie and Stuart stayed for food and conversation at Vallejo's. I had to get home to take of some "honey dos" so I'll have to hear about Bernie's trip to Miami for the Great EsSkate on another evening (maybe he'll post a download for us on the website). I hope to see everyone next week.

Mark, Bryan, and Brian break at West Sacramento City Hall on the February 6, 2006 Monday Night Skate.

Mark, Bryan, Stuart and I showed up to skate tonight.
Bryan is rejoining the skating world after being off his skates for a few years and he is moving right along (he joined us last week and we must not have scared him off).

Stuart is very new to his skates, two weeks and counting! He has excellent balance and skate control for such a short time up on wheels. He is stridin’ and glidin’, heel brakin’ and spin stopping. He claims the spin stops are not completely under control but he can only get better!

I still don’t have a good camera so a lame photo, which I did not forward, is all I have. My apologies to Bryan and Stuart! See photo from last week.

graphic letter We skated over to the Sacramento River levee at 2nd St and then proceeded south taking the multi-use trail toward Miller Park. This is new asphalt - new and very smooth, the skating is good in this neighborhood.

We skated the new path to Broadway and then took the short jaunt to the Miller Park entry. Feral cats greeted us and scurried away, while we kept a sharp eye out for skunks. Part of the marina’s perimeter sidewalk is still flooded so we had to stick to the higher path rather than dropping down along the water.

Cutting through the parking lot we ended up at Miller Park Drive and skated this to connect with the multi-use trail on the levee just south of the parking lot and boat launch.

Up on the levee we startled a skunk, and it scampered in front us before cutting off into the bushes. We still don’t know if skunks can spray while on the run and this skunk didn’t educate us with a perfuming. So for now I will think that they have to be set before they let loose a volley of scent.

We skated the levee path to Sutterville Road; Sutterville to the Riverside connecting ramp (which connects to Keniston?); Keniston to 13th Ave. We skated the 13 through the west end of William Land Park over to Land Park Drive. Stuart performed another excellent spin stop - the guy has an internal gyro!

Onward we traveled to the 15th Ave. entrance and skated 15th Ave. to connect with 18th Ave. 18th took us north, out of the park and connected with 17th St.

We meandered north to California Middle School, grabbed a quick drink and kept going. We crossed over the Marty Way, skating parallel to Land Park Dr. A quick stop was made at the Tower Theater. We took Broadway to Riverside/11th St. and then returned to the start point at 3rd and S.

The weather and conditions were perfect for skating, temps in the 70s, clear skies, no wind. This was a 7 - 8 mile loop.

Mark and I stayed for food and conversation at Vallejo's.

Mark, Bryan, and Brian break at West Sacramento City Hall on the February 6, 2006 Monday Night Skate.

Steve, Mark, Bernie, Bryan and I skated tonight. Bryan was a returning skater from many years ago. He has been off his skates for a while but seemed to roll just fine. A West Sacramento route was chosen and we started off around 7:20pm.

graphic letter We skated north on 3rd Street to O Street and O Street west to the Sacramento River levee. We regrouped at the top of the levee and skated north on the levee promenade to Capitol Mall and the Tower Bridge, where we stopped for a photo op.

We crossed the Tower Bridge to West Sacramento and then skated their brick surfaced "River Walk" north to the sidewalk access at the ziggurat and parking structure. This sidewalk connected us to 2nd Street in West Sac. Steve once again showed off his amazing balance and skating ability (the guy is a cat) at the access sidewalk by skating down the concrete curbing.

The sidewalk's slope is certainly no greater than the legal ADA allowable, about 8%, but with 60 to 70 yards of run to gain speed and at most 6 inches width on top to roll on, this curb run requires excellent skate control or you will end up in the ground cover and picking burrs out of your skin. One day, I'll give it a go, tonight I played it safe and stuck to the sidewalk.

At 2nd Street we continued north, crossing the railroad tracks, and then turned west on C Street. We took 5th Street north to Lighthouse Dr. and skated Lighthouse to Kegle Dr. Kegle north to Carrie St, and Carrie looped us around to Todhunter Ave. Todhunter connects with Sacramento Ave., and we turned east to begin our return.

Sacramento Ave. is a busy, poorly lit street with bad asphalt, the sidewalk is a better choice in this area. At Jefferson we turned south and skated to West Capitol Ave. Eastward we continued on West Cap, taking a break along the way at West Sacramento City Hall (See photo.}.

After our break, we continued to reconnect with the "River Walk" area at the Tower Bridge. We skated over the bridge and returned to the parking lot at 3rd and S St.

All of us stayed for food and conversation at Vallejo's.

The weather conditions were great for skating and this was a fun 6.5 mile loop. Hopefully, Bryan is no worst for wear after strapping the skates back on! Bernie will be checking out the Great ESkate in Florida next week - have fun!

Bernie suggested skating to CSUS and this sounded good to all. We skated east on S Street and crossed over to T Street just before Stockton Blvd, we continued on T over to 59th St. Skating north on 59th we crossed Folsom and took 58th to M St, M St. to 62 St. and connected with Elvas. We cut through to the CSUS campus at the bike path access on Elvas.

At the parking structure, we skated to the top floor to check out the view. It being MLK, Jr. Day, the campus was deserted and the parking structure virtually empty. Bernie snapped a photo and we skated back down. Leaving the campus we meandered over to the main entrance on H Street.

We returned by skating H Street and looped back to 58th St. where we turned on M St. Skating west on M St to Alhambra, we took Alhambra to Capitol, Capitol to the Capitol Park and skating through the park to probably 10th St. I didn’t pay attention to the streets, I just wanted to get to Vallejo’s for food.

This was my first skate in about one month and my legs were feeling it. Skating west on S St. we finished back at the parking lot.
